Thug Life Box Office Collection Day 6: Kamal Haasan’s Film Sees Sharp Decline, Drops to Rs 1.75 Crore

Kamal Haasan had high hopes for Thug Life, especially since it marked his much-anticipated reunion with director Mani Ratnam after their iconic collaboration on Nayakan. Made on a massive budget of Rs 200 crore, the film also stars Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan TR. However, the movie hasn’t lived up to expectations and has seen a steep drop at the box office.

In less than a week since its release, Thug Life has reportedly lost over 3,000 shows across India due to weak audience turnout. One major setback was that the film didn’t release in Karnataka following Kamal Haasan’s controversial remark that “Kannada is born from Tamil.” It did, however, open in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi on June 5.

Thug Life released on his 70th birthday

On its first day, the film was screened in 4,917 shows across the country—1,535 in Hindi, 2,503 in Tamil, 777 in Telugu, and around 102 in premium formats like IMAX 2D and 4DX. But by day six, the number of shows had dropped drastically to just 2,089. Tamil shows were down to 1,290, Hindi to 218, and Telugu to 581.

The occupancy numbers paint a grim picture too. On day six, Tamil screenings had just 17% occupancy, Hindi shows hovered around 6%, and Telugu stood at about 13.5%. According to Sacnilk, the film managed to collect only Rs 1.75 crore (India net) on its sixth day.

In comparison, Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5, which also released around the same time and featured two alternate endings, pulled in Rs 10.75 crore on its fifth day and has already crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in just four days.

So far, Thug Life has earned Rs 40.95 crore in India. Unfortunately, this marks Kamal Haasan’s second box office disappointment in a row after Indian 2. If things continue this way, Thug Life could end up in the same boat as Salman Khan’s Sikandar and Varun Dhawan’s Baby John—both films struggled to make a mark, although Sikandar eventually crossed the Rs 100 crore milestone.
